WHERE ARE MUIR WINDLASSES MADE?
Muir windlasses are manufactured in Tasmania, Australia, situated in the demanding conditions of the Southern Ocean. This challenging marine environment ensures that Muir's products, including their range of windlasses and anchoring systems, are crafted to endure and perform under the toughest conditions. The company emphasizes that products made in such a harsh setting must be exceptionally well-made and durable to withstand the rigorous demands of sea exposure.
HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A MUIR WINDLASS ANCHORING SYSTEM?
Maintaining a Muir windlass effectively involves a few key practices to ensure its longevity and optimal performance:
1. Regular Rinsing: After every excursion, rinse all deck gear, including the windlass with fresh water. This minimizes salt deposits and corrosion.
2. Annual Servicing: For pleasure vessels, it is recommended to strip the windlass yearly. Clean and grease all moving parts with marine grease, Teflon, or lithium grease (e.g., Duckhams’ Keenol, Castrol LMX). Avoid soap-based grease and work and charter vessels should have this servicing carried out more frequently.
3. Lubrication: Ensure the windlass is properly lubricated according to the owner's manual for your specific model. The gear drive is sealed at the factory with long-life synthetic oil, which does not require replacement during the life of the gear drive.
